消风散

• Function: Dispels wind and nourishes blood; clears heat and eliminates dampness.
• Core pathomechanism: Wind-dampness or wind-heat pathogens invade the body, permeate the blood vessels, and become stagnant between the skin and interstitial spaces, leading to itchy skin with red rashes.

1. When it is used

This formula is commonly used for wind rash (urticaria) and eczema. Its composition combines four methods—dispelling wind, clearing heat, eliminating dampness, and nourishing blood—into one, addressing both root and manifestation, and is broadly applicable to various skin disorders caused by wind, dampness, and heat pathogens.

2. Pattern and presentation

Main symptoms:

• Red skin rashes, or patchy, cloud-like blotches over the whole body.
• Itching, with seepage of fluid after scratching breaks the skin.

Systemic and accompanying symptoms:

• Fever, bitter taste in the mouth, dark yellow urine.
• White or yellow tongue coating.

3. Tongue and pulse

• Tongue: Red tongue body, thin yellow or yellow greasy coating.
• Pulse: Floating and rapid, or wiry and rapid.

Calculation of the original raw herb total weight (common ratio):

Jing Jie (schizonepeta) 4.5 g + Fang Feng (saposhnikovia root) 4.5 g + Niu Bang Zi (burdock fruit) 4.5 g + Chan Tui (cicada slough) 4.5 g + Shi Gao (gypsum) 15 g + Zhi Mu (anemarrhena rhizome) 4.5 g + Ku Shen (sophora root) 4.5 g + Mu Tong (akebia stem) 4.5 g + Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) 4.5 g + Sheng Di Huang (fresh rehmannia root) 4.5 g + Hu Ma Ren (sesame seed) 4.5 g + Sheng Gan Cao (fresh licorice root) 4.5 g = 65 g.
