3. Tongue and pulse

• Tongue: Red tongue body, with yellow greasy or yellow dry coating.
• Pulse: Wiry and rapid, or slippery and rapid.

4. Common modifications

• Blazing heat toxin: Add Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit), Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower), and Pu Gong Ying (dandelion) to strengthen the clearing of heat and resolving of toxin.
• Severe gallbladder colic: Add Yan Hu Suo (corydalis rhizome), Chuan Lian Zi (toosendan fruit), and Bai Shao (white peony root) to relax tension and relieve pain.
• Larger or more numerous stones: Add Hai Jin Sha (lygodium spore) and Ji Nei Jin (chicken gizzard lining) to strengthen the transformation and expulsion of stones.
• Severe vomiting: Add Ban Xia (pinellia rhizome) and Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger) to harmonize the Stomach, direct qi downward, and stop vomiting.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:

o Absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. (Because it contains Da Huang (rhubarb rhizome), Mang Xiao (mirabilite), Zhi Ke (bitter orange), and other purgative, qi-breaking substances.)

o Contraindicated in those with Spleen-Stomach cold deficiency, and in the weak and elderly.

o This formula has a strong purgative action that can readily damage the body's righteous qi; it should be discontinued as soon as the pattern resolves and should not be taken long-term.

o Jin Qian Cao (lysimachia herb): 30.00 g

o Yin Chen (virgate wormwood): 165g × 18.18% = 30.00 g

o Mang Xiao (mirabilite): 165g × 18.18% = 30.00 g

o Da Huang (rhubarb rhizome): 165g × 9.09% = 15.00 g

o Bing Lang (areca seed): 165g × 9.09% = 15.00 g

o Yu Jin (turmeric tuber): 165g × 6.06% = 10.00 g

o Huang Qin (baikal skullcap root): 165g × 6.06% = 10.00 g

o Mu Xiang (costus root): 165g × 6.06% = 10.00 g

o Zhi Ke (bitter orange): 165g × 4.55% = 7.50 g

o Hou Po (magnolia bark): 165g × 4.55% = 7.50 g

Total raw herb weight: 30 + 30 + 30 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 165 g

2. Granule conversion and dose

• Converted to 5:1 granules:

o 165 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 33 g granules.

• Recommended dose:

o One dose daily, divided into morning and evening servings, dissolved in warm water, 16.5 g per serving.
