石韦散

Shi Wei (pyrrosia leaf) 12 g + Dong Kui Zi (mallow seed) 12 g + Qu Mai (dianthus) 9 g + Hua Shi (talcum) 15 g + Che Qian Zi (plantago seed) 9 g + Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice root) 3 g = 60 g.

Converted to 5:1 granules:

60 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 12 g granules.

Granule dose: dissolve in warm water and take in three doses, about 4 g per dose.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  1. This formula is an agent for attacking pathogens, cold and disinhibiting in nature; it is therefore absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy.
  2. Contraindicated in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold or Kidney yang deficiency (presenting with aversion to cold, cold limbs, and loose stools).
  3. Use with caution in those with qi deficiency or yin damage with thirst.
• Key points: This formula is suitable for stones of relatively small diameter and regular shape, in patients of otherwise adequate constitution. During treatment, patients should drink plenty of water and combine treatment with jumping exercise to help expel the stone.
• Modern applications: mainly used for kidney stones, ureteral stones, bladder stones, and acute urinary tract infection presenting with a pattern of lower-burner damp-heat.
• Duration of use: This formula should not be taken long-term. If the stone has not passed after a period of use, or if renal colic or hematuria worsens, medical care should be sought promptly to consider other treatment methods.
