Dan Nan Xing (arisaema with bile) 9 g + Gua Lou Ren (trichosanthes seed) 9 g + Huang Qin (scutellaria root) 9 g + Zhi Shi (immature bitter orange) 9 g + Xing Ren (apricot kernel) 9 g + Chen Pi (aged tangerine peel) 6 g + Fu Ling (poria) 6 g + Ban Xia (pinellia rhizome) 9 g = 66 g.

Converted to 5:1 granules:

66 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 13.2 g granules.

Recommended dose and method of administration:

• Converted to ProCare Herbs granules: approximately 6 g per dose, twice daily, taken with warm water after meals.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  1. This formula is relatively cold and cool in nature, so it should not be used for cold-phlegm or damp-phlegm patterns (thin, white, clear phlegm with a white, slippery tongue coating).
  2. Use with caution in cases of Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold with reduced appetite and loose stools.
• Safety warning: Ban Xia in this formula is toxic; ProCare Herbs granules must be prepared using processed Ban Xia (such as Fa Ban Xia or Jiang Ban Xia) to ensure safety of use.
• Modern applications: This formula is widely used for pneumonia, bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease when the pattern is one of internal binding of phlegm-heat.
• Duration of use: This formula is a heat-clearing and draining preparation; it should be discontinued once the condition resolves and should not be taken long-term. After the phlegm-heat has cleared, further regulation should be undertaken as appropriate.
