4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula (excluding the cinnabar coating):

Zhen Zhu Mu (mother-of-pearl) 22.5 g + Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) 45 g + Shu Di (prepared rehmannia root) 45 g + Ren Shen (ginseng) 30 g + Suan Zao Ren (spiny jujube seed) 30 g + Bai Zi Ren (arborvitae seed) 30 g + Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn, substituted with water buffalo horn) 15 g + Fu Shen (poria with hostwood) 15 g + Chen Xiang (agarwood) 15 g + Long Chi (fossilized teeth) 15 g = 267.5 g.

Conversion to 5:1 granules:

267.5 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 53.5 g granules.

Granule dose: Take in 2 doses daily, morning and evening, dissolved in warm water, about 6 g per dose. (The original formula was a pill; granules are now better absorbed, and the dose may be adjusted as advised by a practitioner.)

5. Cautions and clinical notes

[Contraindications]:

1. Strictly contraindicated in pregnancy (as the formula may contain cinnabar, and Chen Xiang and similar herbs have a downward-directing nature).
2. Use with caution in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency, poor appetite, and loose stools (as the formula contains many rich, cloying herbs).
3. Contraindicated in those with impaired liver or kidney function (especially if cinnabar is present).

[Safety warnings]:

1. Cinnabar is toxic, its main component being mercury sulfide (HgS); it must not be taken in excess or for a prolonged period, to avoid mercury poisoning. If ProCare Herbs granules contain cinnabar, they must comply with national standards and be strictly limited in dose. For safety, modern clinical practice often omits cinnabar.
2. Rhinoceros horn in the original formula is now prohibited; ProCare Herbs granules should use concentrated water buffalo horn powder as a substitute.
3. This formula is intended for therapeutic use and should be discontinued once the condition resolves; it should not be taken long-term.

Modern applications: Mainly used for anxiety disorder, insomnia, cardiac neurosis, menopausal syndrome, and hypertension with insomnia and dizziness, in patterns of Heart-Liver yin-blood insufficiency with Liver yang hyperactivity and restlessness of the spirit and soul.

Duration of use: For use during periods of pronounced symptoms, generally 2-4 weeks. Once symptoms such as fright palpitations and insomnia improve, the formula should be discontinued or switched to a milder regulating formula.
