4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula:

Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower) 30 g + Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit) 30 g + Bo He (mint) 18 g + Niu Bang Zi (great burdock fruit) 18 g + Jing Jie Sui (schizonepeta spike) 12 g + Dan Dou Chi (fermented soybean) 15 g + Jie Geng (platycodon root) 18 g + Zhu Ye (lophatherum leaf) 12 g + Lu Gen (reed rhizome) 30 g + Sheng Gan Cao (raw licorice root) 15 g = 198 g.

Converted to 5:1 granules:

198 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 39.6 g granules.

Granule dosage: This formula was originally a powder, and is now a granule; the original method of use may be followed, taken dissolved in warm water in 3-4 doses. 7-9 g per dose (in clinical practice, the single dose and dosing frequency may be adjusted according to the severity of the condition).

5. Cautions and clinical notes

[Contraindications]:

1. Not to be used in cases of external contraction of wind-cold (wind-cold common cold), which present with pronounced aversion to cold, mild fever, no sweating, clear runny nose, thin clear phlegm with cough, and a thin white tongue coating.
2. This formula is acrid and cool in nature; it should be used with caution in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold, or stopped once the condition resolves and not taken for a prolonged period.

Modern applications: Mainly used for the common cold, influenza, acute tonsillitis, upper respiratory tract infection, the initial stage of measles, acute pharyngitis, and mumps, in cases presenting with a wind-heat exterior pattern.

Duration of use: This formula is for externally contracted disease and should be stopped once the condition resolves. It is usually taken for 1-3 days, and may be discontinued once the exterior pattern is resolved and the fever subsides with the body feeling cool again. If symptoms do not improve, or worsen, after taking the formula, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
