5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  • This formula is strongly cold in nature; avoid in patients with Spleen-Stomach cold deficiency.
  • Use with caution in patients with yin deficiency.
  • Use with caution in pregnant women (because Zao Xiu/Chong Lou has mild toxicity and the formula is cold in nature).
  • Zao Xiu (Chong Lou, Paridis rhizome) in this formula has mild toxicity; it should not be taken in excess or over a prolonged period.

6. Granule conversion and dose

• Calculation of total raw herb weight in the original formula:
  • Da Qing Ye (isatis leaf) 15 g + Zao Xiu (Chong Lou, Paridis rhizome) 15 g + Huang Qin (scutellaria root) 9 g + Shi Gao (gypsum) 30 g + Zhi Mu (anemarrhena rhizome) 9 g + Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower) 12 g + Ju Hua (chrysanthemum flower) 9 g + Gan Cao (licorice root) 6 g = 105 g.
• Conversion to 5:1 granules:
  • 105 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 21 g granules.
• Recommended dose:
  • One dose daily, taken in 2-3 portions dissolved in warm water, 7-10 g per portion.
  • Or as directed by a physician. This formula is used for acute heat-pattern illness; discontinue once the condition resolves, and do not take for a prolonged period. Please strictly follow the prescribing physician's instructions.
