3. Tongue and pulse

• Tongue: Pale tongue body with thin white coating.
• Pulse: Thin, weak, and forceless.

4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula (excluding ginger and jujube):

Ren Shen (ginseng root) 9 g + Huang Qi (astragalus root) 9 g + Bai Zhu (white atractylodes rhizome) 9 g + Fu Ling (poria) 9 g + Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) 9 g + Shu Di (prepared rehmannia root) 9 g + Bai Shao (white peony root) 9 g + Yuan Zhi 6 g + Wu Wei Zi 6 g + Chen Pi 6 g + Rou Gui (cinnamon bark) 3 g + Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice root) 6 g = 90 g.

Conversion to 5:1 granules:

90 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 18 g granules.

Recommended dose and method of administration:

• Standard adult daily dose: The classical decoction is generally taken as one dose per day, in two divided servings, taken warm.
• Converted to ProCare Herbs granules:

o Total daily dose is 18 g of granules.

o Taken in two servings: 9 g per dose, twice daily.

• It is recommended to take before meals or on an empty stomach, to aid absorption.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  1. This formula is a warming tonic and should not be used in patterns of yin deficiency with effulgent fire (presenting with five-center heat and a red tongue with little coating).
  2. It is not suitable for use when an unresolved exterior pattern from external contraction is present, so as to avoid trapping the pathogen inside.
• Characteristics: This formula is a typical tonifying and nourishing formula, suitable for the regulation of chronic deficiency and depletion; "nourishing the ying" refers to nourishing the ying blood (nutritive blood).
• Modern applications: Widely used for anemia, neurasthenia, chronic fatigue syndrome, the recovery period after serious illness or surgery, and senile pruritus, in cases where the pattern is one of combined qi and blood deficiency of the Heart and Spleen.
• Duration of use: This formula is intended for regulating chronic deficiency and depletion; a certain duration of use is required for it to take effect, and it may be taken long-term as directed by a practitioner.
