4. Granule conversion and dose

• Standard adult daily dose: The classical decoction is typically taken as one dose per day, divided into two warm doses.
• Conversion to ProCare Herbs granules:

o Taken in two doses: 6 g per dose, twice daily.

• It is recommended to take it hot after meals; a small amount of hot congee may be taken afterward to assist the herbal action, and the patient should be covered warmly to induce a slight sweat.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• [Contraindications]:
  1. This formula is mainly used for patterns of qi deficiency with external contraction of wind-cold-damp. It is contraindicated for external contraction of wind-heat or where the pathogen has already entered the interior and transformed into heat.
  2. Although it contains qi-boosting herbs, it is ultimately an acrid, warm, fragrant, and drying formula, and is therefore unsuitable for those with yin deficiency and blood deficiency.
• ["Turning back the current to save the boat" method]: This formula may also be applied at the onset of dysentery with a concurrent exterior pattern (external contraction complicated by dampness). This method is called "turning back the current to save the boat" (ni liu wan zhou), whereby the exterior is dispersed and dampness eliminated so that the pathogen that has sunk inward is resolved via the exterior. This must be applied only under a physician's precise pattern differentiation.
• Modern applications: Commonly used for colds, influenza, and rheumatoid arthritis in the elderly, postpartum women, or those weakened after illness, where the pattern is differentiated as qi deficiency with external contraction of wind-cold-damp.
• Duration of use: This formula addresses the branch (symptoms); once sweating occurs, it should be stopped. Once the exterior pattern resolves, discontinue use and shift to regulating the constitution.
