• Wine to aid the action of the herbs: The original formula emphasizes decocting with good wine, the intent being to use the warming and unblocking power of wine to help the medicinal action circulate throughout the whole body, thereby enhancing the effect of invigorating blood and reducing swelling.
• Timing according to the location of the toxin: "When the toxin is in the upper body, take after eating one's fill; when it is in the lower body, take on an empty stomach" — that is, take after meals when the disease location is in the upper body, and before meals when it is in the lower body, in order to guide the action of the medicinal.
• Contraindications: Avoid sour foods and iron vessels.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  1. This formula is used for yang-pattern, excess-pattern sores and swellings with toxin at the initial stage. It is contraindicated in yin-type sores with sunken flatness, or in those with underlying Spleen-Stomach deficiency and insufficient qi and blood.
  2. This formula invigorates blood and breaks up stasis, and is therefore absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy.
  3. It should not be used once the sore has already ruptured.
• Safety warning: Ru Xiang and Mo Yao in the formula are irritating to the stomach; caution is advised in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency. ProCare Herbs granules have an optimized processing method, but taking after meals to protect the stomach is still recommended.
• Modern applications: Mainly used for skin and soft tissue infections, furuncles, carbuncles, acute mastitis, and similar conditions presenting the pattern of abundant heat toxin with qi and blood stasis.
• Duration of use: This formula is an attacking, purgative preparation; discontinue once the disease has resolved and do not use it for a prolonged period.
