4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total raw herb weight in the original formula:

Mu Xiang (costus root) 30 g + Bing Lang (areca seed) 30 g + Qian Niu Zi (morning glory seed) 120 g + Da Huang (rhubarb root and rhizome) 90 g + Xiang Fu Zi (nutgrass galingale rhizome) 60 g + Qing Pi (unripe tangerine peel) 30 g + Chen Pi (aged tangerine peel) 30 g + Zhi Ke (bitter orange fruit) 30 g + Huang Lian (coptis rhizome) 30 g + Huang Bai (phellodendron bark) 90 g = 630 g.

Converted to 5:1 granules:

630 g raw herb ÷ 5 = 126 g granules.

Recommended dose and method of administration:

• Standard adult raw herb dose: the classic pill form is taken at 6-9 g per dose.
• Converted to ProCare Herbs granules:
• Twice daily, morning and evening, 6 g per dose. Take with warm water after meals.
• Stop once the condition resolves: this formula is a purgative preparation; discontinue once it takes effect, and do not take it in excess, so as not to damage the body's righteous qi.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• [Contraindications]:
  1. This formula is a strongly purgative preparation with potent properties; it is absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy.
  2. It should not be used by the elderly and frail, those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency, those with depleted fluids, and those without accumulation and stagnation.
  3. It is not suitable for constipation of deficiency type or for yin deficiency with effulgent fire.

6. Difference from Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan (Costus Qi-Regulating Pill)

1. Actions and nature

• Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan: Moves qi to resolve stagnation, purges accumulation and drains heat. Potent in nature; a purgative formula.
• Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan: Moves qi and transforms dampness, strengthens the Spleen and harmonizes the Stomach. Relatively mild in nature; a qi-regulating formula.

2. Core problem addressed

• Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan: Addresses "something blocking the way" (damp-heat plus accumulation and stagnation) — excess pathogens such as dry stool or retained food blocking the intestines and stomach.
• Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan: Addresses "qi not flowing smoothly" (qi stagnation plus damp obstruction) — mainly qi movement and turbid dampness not flowing freely, without severe blockage having formed.

3. Key differentiating symptoms

• Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan: Constipation (bowels not moving) or dysenteric diarrhea (with tenesmus), together with a thick, greasy yellow tongue coating.
• Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan: Abdominal distension as the core symptom, possibly with nausea and belching, with a white, greasy tongue coating.
• If the abdomen feels distended and painful, with constipation or incomplete bowel movements, and a thick yellow tongue coating, consider Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan (and be sure to follow a practitioner's guidance, as its action is potent).
• If there is mainly a sensation of excess gas in the abdomen, with distension relieved somewhat by belching, and a white, greasy tongue coating, consider Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan.
