Systemic and accompanying symptoms:

• Indigestion of food, with gnawing discomfort.
• Depressed mood, or vexation and irritability.
• In women, irregular menstruation and abdominal pain during menstruation may be seen.

3. Tongue and pulse

• Tongue: Greasy tongue coating, either white or yellow, depending on the relative severity of dampness constraint and fire constraint.
• Pulse: Wiry or slippery pulse.

4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total crude herb weight in the original formula:

Xiang Fu (cyperus rhizome) 9 g + Chuan Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome) 9 g + Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit) 9 g + Cang Zhu (atractylodes rhizome) 9 g + Shen Qu (medicated leaven) 9 g = 45 g.

Conversion to 5:1 granules:

45 g crude herb ÷ 5 = 9.0 g granules.

Granule dose: This formula was traditionally prepared as pills; it has now been converted to granules, and the traditional pill usage may be followed for reference. Dissolve in warm water and take twice daily, morning and evening, about 4.5 g per dose.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

[Contraindications]:

1. This formula mainly moves qi and disperses stagnation; prolonged use may readily deplete qi, blood, and yin fluids, so it is not suitable for prolonged use alone in deficiency-type constraint patterns.
2. Use with caution in pregnant women, since herbs such as Chuan Xiong in the formula have blood-invigorating and qi-moving effects.

Modern applications: Mainly used for chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, indigestion, gastrointestinal neurosis, cholecystitis, hepatitis, irregular menstruation, menopausal syndrome, depression, and anxiety, where the pattern is qi movement constraint accompanied by constraint of blood, fire, dampness, or food.

Duration of use: This formula is intended for regulating disorders and should be discontinued once the disorder resolves. After the symptoms of constraint have eased, adjustments should be made according to the patient's constitution. If long-term use is needed, herbs that boost qi and nourish blood, or nourish yin, should be added as appropriate under a physician's guidance, to prevent damage to the body's righteous qi.
