3. Tongue and pulse

• Tongue: red tongue body with thin yellow coating.
• Pulse: wiry and rapid, or wiry, fine, and rapid.

4. Granule conversion and dose

• Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula (based on classical dosage, including fresh ginger):
  • Chai Hu 6g + Mu Dan Pi 4.5g + Zhi Zi 4.5g + Dang Gui 9g + Bai Shao 9g + Bai Zhu 9g + Fu Ling 9g + Bo He 3g + Sheng Jiang 3g + Zhi Gan Cao 4.5g = 61.5 g.
• Conversion to 5:1 granules:
  • 61.5 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 12.3 g granules.
• Recommended dose and method of administration:
  • One dose daily, dissolved in warm water and taken in two divided servings.
  • It is recommended to take after meals, to protect the Spleen and Stomach.
  • Each serving is 6 g.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

1. Contraindications: Not suitable for patterns of yin deficiency with hyperactive yang (such as dizziness and tinnitus, red tongue with scant coating) or excess patterns of Liver fire flaring upward (such as red face and eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, constipation). Although this formula has a heat-clearing action, it remains fundamentally a formula for regulating the Liver and Spleen, and its heat-clearing power is relatively mild.
2. Emotional regulation: During treatment, one should maintain a relaxed and cheerful mood and avoid anger and depression, so that the formula can achieve its full effect.
3. Modern applications: This formula is widely used for premenstrual syndrome, menopausal syndrome, chronic hepatitis, mammary gland hyperplasia, and states of anxiety and depression that belong to the pattern of Liver qi stagnation with blood deficiency transforming into heat.
4. Duration of use: Emotional and menstrual disorders are mostly chronic; it should be taken for a certain duration of use under a physician's guidance.
