Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula (excluding fresh ginger):

Chai Hu (bupleurum root) 9 g + Bai Shao (white peony root) 9 g + Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) 9 g + Bai Zhu (white atractylodes rhizome) 9 g + Fu Ling (poria) 9 g + Bo He (mint) 3 g + Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice root) 4.5 g = 52.5 g.

Converted to 5:1 granules:

52.5 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 10.5 g granules.

Granule dose: Take in 2 doses daily, morning and evening, dissolved in warm water, about 5 g per dose.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

• Contraindications:
  1. This formula is used for patterns of Liver qi stagnation with blood deficiency and Spleen weakness. It is not suitable for use alone in cases of Liver stagnation transforming into fire, or yin deficiency with Liver yang hyperactivity.
  2. Use with caution during fever from external contraction (common cold).
• Characteristics: This formula is a foundational formula for regulating the Liver and Spleen and is extremely widely used clinically, often serving as a base formula to be modified according to the pattern. For example, adding Mu Dan Pi (moutan bark) and Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit) produces "Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San" (Moutan and Gardenia Rambling Powder, a modified version of Xiao Yao San), used for patterns of Liver stagnation transforming into fire.
• Modern applications: Widely used for chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, chronic gastritis, gastrointestinal neurosis, premenstrual tension syndrome, menopausal syndrome, and mammary hyperplasia, in cases where the pattern is identified as Liver qi stagnation with blood deficiency and Spleen weakness.
• Duration of use: This formula is a regulating preparation; it should be taken consistently for a certain period to harmonize qi and blood, and may be taken long-term as directed by a practitioner.
