4. Granule conversion and dose

Assuming the total weight of the raw herbs for one decoction is 96 g (for ease of calculation), the dosage of each herb is as follows:

• Calcined Long Gu (calcined fossilized bone): 20 g
• Calcined Mu Li (calcined oyster shell): 20 g
• Shi Jue Ming (abalone shell): 14 g
• Shou Wu Teng (fleeceflower stem): 10 g
• Sheng Di Huang (fresh rehmannia root): 6 g
• Gou Teng (uncaria stem with hooks): 6 g
• Fu Ling (poria): 6 g
• Suan Zao Ren (spine date seed): 6 g
• Huang Lian (coptis rhizome): 2 g
• Dan Zhu Ye (lophatherum herb): 2 g
• Deng Xin Cao (juncus pith): 2 g
• Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice root): 2 g
• Total raw herb weight: 20+20+14+10+6+6+6+6+2+2+2+2 = 96 g

Converted to a 5:1 granule extract:

96 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 19.2 g of granules.

Granule dosing: Dissolve in warm water and take in 2-3 doses.

• Twice daily, about 9.5 g per dose.
• Three times daily, about 6.5 g per dose.

5. Cautions and clinical notes

[Contraindications]:

1. This formula is relatively cold and cooling in nature; use with caution in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold, poor appetite, and loose stools.
2. It should be discontinued during episodes of externally contracted fever.

Modern applications: Mainly used for anxiety disorder, insomnia, childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), night terrors in children, hypertension accompanied by insomnia and dizziness, and menopausal syndrome, in patterns identified as exuberant Heart and Liver fire with yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity.

Duration of use: This formula is a regulating preparation and must be taken for a certain period before its effect becomes apparent. It may be taken for 2-4 weeks as directed, and once symptoms improve, the dose may be reduced for maintenance or discontinued.
