4. Granule conversion and dose

Calculation of the total raw herb weight of the original formula:

Shu Di Huang (prepared rehmannia root) 24 g + Shan Zhu Yu (cornus fruit) 12 g + Shan Yao (Chinese yam) 12 g + Ze Xie (alisma rhizome) 9 g + Mu Dan Pi (moutan bark) 9 g + Fu Ling (poria) 9 g + Zhi Mu (anemarrhena rhizome) 6 g + Huang Bai (phellodendron bark) 6 g = 87 g.

Conversion to 5:1 granules:

87 g raw herbs ÷ 5 = 17.4 g granules.

Granule dose: Dissolve in warm water and take in 2 doses, morning and evening, about 9 g per dose. (The original formula was a pill; granules are now better absorbed, and the dose may be adjusted as advised by a practitioner.)

5. Cautions and clinical notes

Contraindications:

1. Use with caution or avoid in those with Spleen-Stomach yang deficiency and loose stools. This formula is somewhat cold and cloying in nature, which may easily damage Spleen yang and worsen diarrhea.
2. Avoid in fever due to qi deficiency and in excess-heat patterns, marked by high fever, profuse sweating, thirst with a desire to drink, and a surging, forceful pulse.
3. Discontinue during fever from common cold.

Safety warning: During preparation, ProCare Herbs granules undergo standardized processing and strict quality control. However, it should be noted that Huang Bai and Zhi Mu in this formula are bitter and cold; prolonged use may easily damage the Spleen and Stomach, so continuous long-term use is not advised.

Modern applications: Mainly used for hyperthyroidism, diabetes, renal tuberculosis, bone tuberculosis, menopausal syndrome, recurrent oral ulcers, chronic urinary tract infection, neurogenic deafness, and sexual dysfunction (such as premature ejaculation, priapism), where the pattern is one of yin deficiency with effulgent fire.

Duration of use: This formula is a therapeutic preparation and should be discontinued once the condition resolves. Once deficient-fire symptoms (such as tidal fever, night sweats, dry mouth, etc.) are markedly relieved, the formula may be stopped, or switched to a milder formula such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan for continued regulation. It should not be taken long term as a health tonic.
